The negro was introduced into the Colonial Virginia about 1619 and at first they were not slaves but were just considered another hand on the farms of the eastern shores. It was much later that the role of slave was imposed upon the negro as the farms grew much larger and work forces were more defined. In Tennessee in the early days in East Tennessee, there were never any large force of slaves and only when West and Middle Tennessee became more defined were the need for slaves important. Dr. Patterson, explores the early laws that protected the slaves rights up to the time the various churches got into the act of seeking emancipation for the slaves in the middle of the 19th century. The Methodist churchs Discipline of 1808 stated that anyone who owned another person could not become a member of the Methodist Church. However, time changes many situations but none the less, they were one of prime leaders in the act to free all slaves. The Quakers were equally involved. This study of the role of slavery ends in 1865 with the freeing of the slaves, but what happened next is of equal importance but not covered by this volume.
An appendixes is added to this volume to cover many aspect of the slavery question not answered in the full context.
