The role the Overmountain men played in the history of Tennessee is well known, however, why these men walked over several mountains to pitch battle against their own relatives wearing red coats is still a mystery. Mr. Burnett goes into depth as to why these staunch pioneers who were willing to carve a new country from the unknown were willing to fight for their freedom and the ability to choose their own destiny. This spirit played out later during the Civil War as these same people came together to fight again. However, in this latter fight, many of the families were divided both North and South. This essay goes into the spirit behind the fighting men and their families.
