The story of the North Carolina 26th Regiment Infantry is a combination of two former volumes: John W. Moores Roster of North Carolina Troops in the War Between the States from 1882 and Walter Clarks Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War 1861-’65 from 1901.
In the Roster portion of this volume you will find a number of items of interest on each of the men. You can find, using the following guide: c = captured – cm = commissioned – co = county – COM = Company – e = enlisted – d = died – dg = discharged – dt = detailed – k = killed – m = missing – p = promoted – pr = prisoner – r = resigned – tr = transferred and w = wounded.
The following Companies were the basis of this Regiment:
Co. A – Jeff Davis Mountaineers – Ashe County under Capt. Andrew N. McMilliam
Co. B – Waxhaw Jackson Guards – Union Co. Under Capt. J. J. C. Steele
Co. C – Wilkes Volunteers – Wilkes County under Capt. Abner R. Carmichael
Co. D – Wake Guards – Wake County under Capt. Oscar R. Rand
Co. E – Independent Guards – Chatham County under Capt. W. S. Webster
Co. F – Hibriten Guards – Caldwell County under Captain Nathaniel P. Rankin
Co. G – Chatham Boys – Chatham County with Captain William S. McLean
Co. H – Moore Independents – Moore County under Capt. William P. Martin
Co. I – Caldwell Guards – Caldwell County under Capt. Wilson S. White
Co. J – PeeDee Wild Cats – Anson County under Capt. James C. Carraway.
In the history is a very unique story of a man and his wife both serving in that unit all during the War until she is discovered to be a woman. They are discharged and return home to later fight for the Union.
Roster – Co. G – Buckner, Ricahrd – enlisted March 6, 1862 in Chatham Co.; killed July 1st 1862 at Malvern Hill.
History – Battle of New Bern, NC 14 March 1862 – General Ambrose E. Burnside flushed with his captures of Fort Hatteras (29 August 1861) and Roanoke Island (10 February 1862) was now about to attempt still greater movement on the military chess board and on 11 March, 1862 he embarked the brigades of Foster, Reno and Parke and accompanying artillery at Roanoke Island and reached Slocums Creek where it empties into the Neuse River, some sixteen miles from New Bern, on the evening of the 12th….
