Webb County, the largest of the southern Texas counties was created in 1848 and named for James Webb, Secretary of the Treasury, Attorney General of the Republic of Texas and later Judge of the United States District Court. In this volume there is a brief history of southwest Texas and a collection of biographical sketches of many persons living in the county in the 1890s when the original was printed.
