Washington County, located in upper east Tennessee is frequently known as the “Birthplace of the State of Tennessee” as it was established in 1777 as Washington County, North Carolina before Tennessee was established in 1796. It was named for General George Washington while the Revolutionary War was still raging. When the State of Franklin was established in 1784-1788, this area was known as “Washington District”. For a time, this area was also known as the Territory South of the River Ohio or Southwestern Territory. These early records of the county tell the true story of what was going on in the area at the time period. The Court of Pleas was where the day to day running of the county took place in the early days. The information identifies people in time and place as well as some of the activities in which they were involved.
