Sullivan County in northeastern Tennessee is one of the oldest of the counties and at the same time, the gateway into Tennessee. Into this area came the Rhea family. Many of the members of this family had a great part in the development of the state. Two of the sons of Reverend Joseph Rhea in particular helped in the development of this state. Mathew Rhea [1755-1816] was the Clerk of the Court for a number of years. James Rhea [1774-1845] likewise help in the development as he settled in Blountville where he was Postmaster. Other members of the family were in the state as well. Each of them contributed greatly to the State of Tennessee.
