Lafayette County, located in the west central portion of the state, was created in 1823 and named for Gilbert du Motier also known as the Marquis de Fayette. County which was formed in 1820 and broken up to form Lafayette, Jackson, Cass, Johnson, Henry, St. Clair and parts of Bates and Benton Counties.
