Jefferson County was part of the original land area that North Carolina controlled. West of the mountains the settlers came as early at 1783 when men like Alexander Outlaw, Robert McFarland, James Hill, Wesley White, James Randolph, Thomas Jarnagin, Joseph Copeland, James Hubbard and Robert Gentry made this area home. These land grants are granted by the State of North Carolina by the various governors of that state.
