During the Great Depression in the early 1900s, many Americans were given a “job” by the United States Government to support their family. One such “job” was transcribing early court, family, Bible, and cemetery records as well as other local records. Original versions were typed on onion skin paper with “x” number of carbon copies. Although the State Archives owns the vast majority of ‘first’ or typed copy, carbons have circulated for years but are now scattered. Often the typing is not the best and is difficult to read but these valuable records still constitute one of the best sources of information for Tennessee Counties. In many cases, these are all that remain of the original as many county records have been lost. WPA records are generally full text transcription: much larger in scope than an abstraction or summary.
State of Tennessee -vs- Gross Scruggs: Bastardy
… answer the State of Tennessee of a charge alleged against him for begetting a Bastard
child of the Body of Edith Woods … it is considered that the State of Tennessee
recover against the said Scruggs the sum of $100, the amount of his recognizance in
this behalf acknowledged … [continues].
John Kifer -vs- The Estate of Thomas Davis … a summons issued directing the Sheriff to
Summon three justices to ascertain and certify whether the property of the defendant levied on by the
Constable be perishable or not and should the same be reported perishable and not replevied within
Sixty days – that the same be sold according ….
James H. Davis -vs- George Jennings: Order Sale … that he had levied
on a certain tract of land containing seventy-two acres joining the land of John Morgan, Hezekiah Danley, and the heirs of Philip Maltsberger,
deceased on Middle Creek … therefore … it is considered that all the right
Title, interest claim and demand of said George Jennings of in and to the aforesaid tract of
and be condemned to the satisfaction of the recovery aforesaid and that the same or so much thereof as well satisfy said recovery and the costs of this motion be sold as the law directs.
Attest: James Patterson: An assignment from Lewis Morgan to George House of
a plat and certificate of survey of #255 was duly acknowledged and the said Lewis Morgan
and is as follows: July 27, 1826: I assign over the within plat and certificate of
survey to George House being for value accord for him.
State of Tennessee -vs- John Collett: Indictment for Pettit Larcey … punishment
to be inflicted on the defendant … is reduce to five lashes and the Sheriff of
Greene County is ordered to execute the judgement of the Court at 10 o’clock …
May 24, April 1826
John Ottinger -vs- Gilbert Evans … the defendant having been arrested by
virtue of a Ca. Sa. issued by a Justice of the Peace … it is ordered that he be discharged and that the
plaintiff pay the costs in this behalf expended.
