Cocke County, located in east Tennessee nestled next to North Carolina, was established 9 October 1797 from parts of Jefferson County and named for William Cocke, one the first Senators from Tennessee. The area was settled by the Cherokee prior to the Europeans arriving in the area. The Entries in this volume describe the various surveys for land in the county. They do not give the “calls” of a survey which is to say “… SW from point A 150 poles to point B on the top of a pile of rock on the ridge about the creek…”. What is given is a brief description of the land, with acreage, and adjoins, names and dates are included with the Entry number. A great source to establish connections for the time period of 1853 through the early part of 1871.
“By virtue of an entry made in the entry takers office at Newport of No. 2257 – dated the 2nd day of March 1858. I have surveyed for Lewis A. Click nine acres three roods and fifteen perches of land. Lying in the county aforesaid on the waters of Englishes Creek. Beginning cor[ner] James Huff deceased & Wyly Hicks, etc. [signed by surveyors]”
