Monroe County was created in 1819 when the Hiwassee Land Purchase was finalized between the State of Tennessee and the Cherokee Nation. It was named for President Monroe. In this area were the Cherokee towns of Chota, Tellico, Citico and Toqua. Fort Loudon was built in 1756 at the junction of the Tellico and Little Tennessee Rivers. This was the first structure erected in Tennessee by Anglo-Americans, i.e. troops from South Carolina. These church records give the meetings of the sessions of the church during the years given.
