In February 1796, the Georgia State Legislature created from Screven and Bryan counties a new county and called it Bullock. The name was misspelled as the county was named for Archibald Bulloch, a Revolutionary leader, elected President of the Executive Council of Georgia on January 20, 1776. Parts of Bullock have been cut out in the formation of other counties, such as in 1812 Emanuel; 1905 Jenkins; 1914 Candler and in 1914 Evans counties were formed from Bullock. It is reported that in 1864 there was a courthouse fire, but none of the records were destroyed, however, some of the marriage records are missing. Due to the age of the Register, some of the listings are in such poor condition it is impossible to read them.
