Bledsoe County is the oldest county in Sequatchie Valley and divides East Tennessee from Middle Tennessee. Sequatchie Valley runs from the Crossville, Tennessee area down into Alabama and is the longest valley in the world. The Civil War records include the information and minutes of the Grand Army of the Republic Post 98 or the Lewis Collins Post for the Union soldiers. Their information was gleaned from various sources including the 1890 Federal Soldiers Census and G.A. R. Records. The Confederate soldiers were gleaned from many more sources as there was no real collection of them to be found in the county, except for the 1890 Federal Soldiers Census which did include a few of the Confederates. The final portion of the volume includes an alphabetical listing of both Union and Confederate soldiers. Some of these are marked with the army represented, but some are not. The scant information we have on many of them is not enough to determine which army in which they belonged. Both sides had units of the same number so only if the captains and or commanding officer was listed could you determine which army was involved.
