James Patton and his nephew William Preston were both surveyors for Augusta County. This notebook was found in a small college library in western Virginia which houses the Preston collection of materials. It was not in the best of shape with one corner of the book missing, water marks throughout and other features that made reading very difficult. The majority of the deeds surveyed were west of the Shenandoah Valley, but not into the West Virginia area. We have included copies of the original pages along with the transcription. The transcription does not include the ?calls?, i.e. so many poles east to a rock beside the bo [black oak] tree, etc.. This allows the reader to decided for themself if the transcription is correct.
