Chester County was the last county in Tennessee to be created by the State Legislature in 1875 from parts of Hardeman, Henderson, McNairy and Madison Counties and was to be named Wisdom County. This county was never organized and in March 1879 the request was repealed by the Legislature and the creation of Chester County was organized but delayed until 1882. It was named for Colonel Robert I. Chester, a quartermaster in the War of 1812. Chester was one of the early Postmaster in Jackson as well as a Federal Marshall. This small book was produced around 1924 to give some of the background of the county in its formation and early days.
C. M. Cason was elected the countys first Registr, and was followed in this office by Mr. Mich. Dodds, who died in office, and Uncle Joe Walker, as he was familiarly known, was elected and H. D. Criner, now of Texas followed Mr. Walker. Then Mr. A. G. Sewell was elected and served up to the time that W. T. Lindsey was elected, who is now holding said office.
