Decatur County, located on the west side of the Tennessee River as it returns from Alabama going towards Kentucky, was created in November 1845 from part of Perry County west of the River in response to a petition by the citizens on the west side of the river who lacked easy access to the county seat on the east side. It was name for Stephen Decatur, Jr. who was noted in the first and second Barbary War and the War of 1812 for his seamanship on the oceans during this time period. In this volume are the surveys of the early lands in the area from 1846 up to 1860.
