Wharton County, Texas in 1898 was located in what was called Southwest Texas. It was created on 3 April 1846 out of lands taken from Matagorda, Jackson and Colorado counties. It was named for William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton. In this volume you will find a number of brief sketches of the families of several persons of importance when it was written in 1898. There is also a brief history of Southwest Texas with a separate index. The biographies have their own index.
GEORGE H. NORTHINGTON – Among the well known business men and extensive cotton planters of Wharton County, Texas is George H. Worthington, a member of the mercantile firm of Duncan & Northington. His paternal grandfather, Andrew Northington, was a product of the Old North State and as early settler of Texas, settling in this State in 1831 in Brazoria County.
