The Confederate raider “Shenandoah” brought the American Civil War to the far reaches of the world. In the 58,000 mile trip around the world, the CSS Shenandoah captured or destroyed more than 32 Union merchant and whaling ships and their cargoes would be destroyed. When the ship rounded the Cape of Good Hope off of Africa the Captain learned that the war had been over for four months and he was now fighting without cause or state. In the eyes of the Union this ship was now a pirate vessel the Captain had to make a choice – surrender or sail on. He chose the latter.
